The Evan Lurie Gallery to host an exploration of Realism and Neorealism artwork.

Carmel, IN – April 18, 2009 – The Evan Lurie Gallery will host a special gallery showing showcasing artwork in the style of realism and neo-realism with a special appearance and lecture by featured artists Jorge Santos and Stephen Shaheen. The exhibition, which will open on April 18, 2009 will remain on display through May 20, 2009, will also include new work from Spanish surrealistic artist Arnau Alemany, and New York based sculptor Stephen Shaheen.

An artistic moment that began in the mid-19th century, Realism was born from the cultural impact of the scientific movement and pushed artists to accurately define the objective nature of their subjects. A half a century later a new movement in art would be born from this foundation, accurately called neo-realism, in which artists would explore using stronger colors and shapes to portray their subjects. Jorge Santos, Steve Shaheen and Arnau Alemany all use these elements and concepts in their work along with their own unique styles, which have earned them worldwide acclaim.

Jorge Santos, an Portuguese artist whose work has appeared on the covers of magazines such as Juxtapose and American Art Collector and on television shows such as NBC’s “Will and Grace”, will be lecturing prior the show at 1 pm in the gallery. Santos will also be on site for the event, which will display his newest body of work completed over the last year.

Stephen Shaheen, a marble and granite sculptor based out of New York who trained in Italy and earned his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2005, will be lecturing prior to the show at 2:30 pm in the gallery. Shaheen is also president and artist of the Memoria Project, a not-for-profit entity dedicated to the design and realization of a 100-ton marble and granite landscape installation in New Jersey. The project, which has been profiled in the New York Times, is a tribute honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Arnau Alemany, recognized as one of today’s leading surrealist artists, works and resides in Spain where his work has most recently been included in the new Spanish Surrealist Museum along with Salvador Dali and others. Also a master Lithographer, the Lurie exhibition will include his newest oil pieces and two lithographs, which are hand-signed and numbered by Alemany.

The Evan Lurie Gallery is located at 30 West Main Street, Carmel, IN 46032 and doors will be open for the event from 5:00 – 10:00 pm. Lectures will begin prior to the gallery event at 2 pm. Both the event and the lectures are free of charge and open to the general public.
