Carmel Arts & Design District’s

Carmel, IN – The Old Town Arts & Design Merchants Association (OTADMA) in partnership with the City of Carmel and Current in Carmel Publications drew more than 8,000 visitors to the first ever Rock the District event this past weekend, Friday July 6th and Saturday, July 7th.  Visitors from neighboring states, other cities in Indiana and local and surrounding communities came to the Carmel Arts & Design District to experience shopping, entertainment and dining, as well as a free concert by national recording artist, Jon McLaughlin.

More than 65 vendors participated in the “Sensational Sidewalk Sale” on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.  District merchants and other outside Carmel businesses had tables lining Main Street selling goods and promoting services throughout the day.

Ten professional bands entertained visitors from two stages at Saturday’s event.  The following bands or musical groups performed during the Rock the District event, either Friday night at the “Preview Party” or at Saturday’s main event: Indiana Wind Symphony; Arch Tops; Shaded Sound; Red Light Exchange; Three Miles High; Something Rather Naughty; Steve Newby; Sarah Scharbrough; Austin Bridges; Mike Redmond: Barometer Soup and Jon McLaughlin, whose performance ended the Rock the District event.

District merchants planned special activities, offered special promotions and hosted local musicians in their stores as well.  Lois Wyant, co-owner of Ami Gallery & Wyant Photography Studio, chairwoman of the OTADMA Special Events Committee and Rock the District VIP sponsor rented a moon-walk and a special Carmel High School football team dunk tank as part of the Rock the District festivities in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary of Wyant Photography.  Wyant also offered a free portrait session or high school senior portrait settings to all those in attendance.

Tom Missler, owner of Missler Design Studio, and designer of the Jon McLaughlin Rock the District poster, banners, Backstage Pass flier and T-shirts, handed out 500 free Rock the District posters to visitors during the festival.  Heather Pirowski, owner of Lucky Lou and OTADMA Special Events Committee member hosted a free meet and greet with Jon McLaughlin after the show.

“We’d like to thank all the dedicated merchants for making the event a great success.  We would also like to thank our sponsors, who made the event possible.  We hope to Rock the District again next year,” said Sherry Mielke, Director of Finance for the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.
