Chinese New Year in the Arts & Design District

Carmel, IN – In celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Indianapolis Chinese Community Center, Inc. (ICCCI) has decorated the light posts in the Carmel Arts & Design District with red Chinese lanterns. Chinese New Year begins today, February 3, 2011. It marks the beginning of the year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese calendar.

A collection of artwork by the Chinese students at ICCCI is also being displayed in the Carmel Arts & Design District in the storefront window at 111 West Main Street, Suite 130. The pieces represent the way the students feel about the Chinese New Year and how important it is to their culture. The lanterns and artwork collection will be displayed until Thursday, February 10th.

ICCCI was established in 1995 by a group of immigrant families. It is entirely administrated by volunteers. After a decade of efforts, it has become the largest vocational Chinese language school in the central Indiana, enrolling approximately 290 students in 2009. It runs every Sunday afternoon at Carmel High School.

ICCCI is holding its annual Chinese New Year Celebration event on Sunday, February 6th from 1:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at North Central High School (1801 East 86th Street, Indianapolis). The event features authentic Chinese New Year traditions, including carnival games and “lucky money” for children in the cafeteria. The event concludes with a stage performance in the auditorium.
