Artists awarded more than $14,000 in prizes for competition featuring 59 artists from Midwest and beyond
The eighth annual Carmel on Canvas plein air paint out was held September 16-18 and featured artists in open-air painting exhibition and competition – which took place on the sidewalks throughout the Carmel Arts & Design District, Midtown Plaza, Monon Greenway, Carmel City Center, Japanese Gardens and Central Park.

“Carmel on Canvas was once again a great success with many talented artists traveling a great distance to create images of our beautiful city landscapes,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “I want to congratulate the winners and thank all of the participants for helping us to make this annual event one of the best of its kind in the country.”

The Carmel on Canvas plein air event hosted 59 highly acclaimed artists from the Midwest and beyond, including Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Florida. The artists competed in a variety of plein air contests during the three-day event, registering in a division that matched their skill or age level: professional, non-professional, teen or children.
Chicago-based art teacher and artist Steve Puttrich served as the judge.

On Saturday morning, a Quick Paint competition took place at the Carmel Farmers Market at Carter Green. Winners of that contest were selected by visitors to the market, which raised community awareness of the event overall. An Art Fair concluded the weekend on Sunday afternoon, where artists displayed and sold their work to visitors. Artists displayed creations from the Carmel on Canvas event as well as pieces from their broader scope of work.

This open-air painting exhibition and competition takes place on the sidewalks throughout the Carmel Arts & Design District, Carmel’s Midtown the City Hall Japanese Gardens, Carmel City Center and NEW FOR 2022, Carmel Central Park with its 161 acres of beautiful green space!

Carmel on Canvas is a great way to bring many artists from across the Midwest to create works of art using Carmel Arts & Design District as their inspiration. One of my favorite aspects of this event is that the artists interact with the public who are able to see the works of art created. Our desire is to grow this event to be the best plein air paint out in the country,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.

The Carmel on Canvas plein air event hosts more than 60 highly-acclaimed artists from states around the Midwest including Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and many Indiana communities as well. The artists will compete in a variety of plein air contests within the three-day event. They will register in a division that matches their skill level; professional, non-professional, teen and child.

On Saturday morning, a Quick Paint takes place at the Carmel Farmers Market at Carter Green. The winners of the adult and child categories will be selected by visitors to the market, which raises community awareness of the event overall.

The Carmel on Canvas Art Fair takes place on Sunday afternoon from Noon – 4 p.m, nestled within the popular Carmel PorchFest event on Artists' Lane at 2nd St. NW between 1st Ave. NW and 2nd Ave. NW. Artists will display creations from the Carmel on Canvas event as well as pieces from their broader scope of work.
